Around The Farm...
Hello everybody! Happy May!! How are all of you
doing? Things are pretty crazy out here in Eighty Four, PA with all the
May activities we have going on at The SpringHouse. Allow me to share
some of them with you.
April and May are out big Farm Tour months so right now, we are in the
thick of farm tours. Let me tell you about yesterday's. We had almost
two hundred people here (preschoolers and their parents) for a farm tour
and most of them had already milked the cow, fed the calves
and watched the modern milking in the milking parlor when Jane called me
over to tell me a cow was having a calf in the maternity pen. I hustled
my group outside of the parlor to see this most amazing sight. The cow
was a first-calf heifer so she was having a little trouble. Bill got
the pulling links (one of my "tourers" called them the calf forceps, but
they go around the calf's hooves, not her head), and he and Katrina
tried with all their might to pull that huge calf out of the cow.
 They
were pulling so hard that they actually pulled the cow a foot or two
through the sawdust. Well, that calf was not budging! We knew the
calf was not in distress because his hooves were twitching and his
tongue was flicking (they did get the calf's nose out enough to clean it
out, but that was as far as he was going). So my brother Sam got the
pulling jack which works much like a car jack. He fitted the U-shaped
base around both side of the cows flanks (she was laying down, so one
under her and one on top). Then, he clipped the pulling links to the
jack and slowly "jacked" the links tighter and tighter until the calf
started sliding out.
|
Now, any calf I've
ever pulled has slid right out after that big head comes out, but this
one-no way!
Sam had to keep "jacking" even after the big head was out, after the big
shoulders were out, and all the way through the big hips! Woowee! Bill
checked the calf and said "It's a bull".
All the tour guides announced to the group "It's a BOY!" and all two
hundred people cheered. The mama cow jumped up as soon as that calf was
out, took one look at all her trouble and went the other way!! I think she
was saying, "No thank you! I've had enough of you!" She did eventually
settle down and come over to lick her big boy after we all walked away.
What an exciting morning for our tour guests though! I had one teacher tell
me that in all her years of coming for tours, she had never seen a calf
born. With over 200 calves born a year at our place every year, and she had
been here lots of times, I'd have thought that she'd have seen one. So, the
educational farm tour was even more so yesterday!
Store Happenings...
Speaking of farm stuff, have I told you that we're hosting something
new this year? Farm Heritage Day will be held on Saturday, May 24, 11 am to
4 pm. We are so excited! Jane has been working very hard on lining up all
kinds of old-time "chores" for folks to watch like chair caning, quilting,
tatting, wood working, and I forget what else ( I think she has about ten of
them). We'll be giving free farm tours and we'll have live music all during
that time too. From 1 to 3 pm, John Hall from WORD Fm radio station will be
here to broadcast live and also participate in some fun contests like Cow
Chip Throwing, Ice Cream Eating and Seed Spitting. Plan to come for the
whole day; we'll feature great old-fashioned meals both inside and outside
so just come hang out on the farm for a day! Oh, Rosie the Pink Cow will be
here giving out pink nickels too! We can't wait! Hope to see you there!
Okay, tomorrow's our big Mother's Day Chicken Bar B Q which means that I
need to gather all kinds of tables and chairs from Mom's house and my house
to make extra seating inside. So, I'd better get to busy-it's been nice
sharing our May Crazies with you. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Store Happenings...
Hello everybody! It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood!! Are
you loving the Spring that has finally sprung? We're gearing up for a
busy upcoming graduation season-whew! Lots of phone calls coming in for
catering for graduation parties, communions, reunions, showers, and
weddings! It's so much fun to be a part of so many folks big events.
Here's a funny that a customer told me this week about catering. She
said she had to throw together a party for her father for a small number
of people, and she wanted to do it all herself. She asked her father
what he wanted for his menu. His reply was, "I don't care what you
serve so long as you have SpringHouse Alabama Vegetable Casserole!"
Oh, here's something else fun we're cooking up! A Farm Heritage Day!
We're holding the event here at The SpringHouse on May 24, and Jane is
planning a great day! Antique Tractors, a tent full of primitive
artisans, free Farm Tours of The SpringHouse Dairy Farm, live concerts
outside all day, great old-fashioned eating inside, and what ever else
she thinks up will be the agenda for the day. If you have any great
ideas or something farm heritage you think we should consider, give us a
call or an e-mail with your ideas! We love your input!

Oh, my, you should have seen all ladies here today! It was the Red Hat
Society in our Sunporch for an afternoon tea party. They were beautiful in
the bright purple and red!
Have you tried our new cheesecakes yet? Oh my!! Maybe you don't want to
start-they are fabulous! Key Lime Cheesecake, Chocolate Mousse Mirage, and
French Strawberry Pie (with a chocolate ganache base) are my favorites! I
was taking care of some new folks last night at the buffet and I said, "Oh,
be sure to check out the desserts. We have fabulous desserts!" Their reply
was, "That's what we've heard!"
I was just looking out at the flower bed. It's time for it to start
blooming-Mother's Day Chicken Bar B Q is right around the corner, and we'd
love to be beautiful by then!!
Uh-oh, gotta go! The natives are getting restless out there! I'll talk to
you another day!
